Abstract:
A process for producing pentaerythritol by the dehydrating condensation of pentaerythritol in the presence of an acid catalyst, which comprises the step of conducting the condensation reaction preferably in a polar solvent and/or the step of terminating the reaction by lowering the temperature of the reaction mixture before the conversion of pentaerythritol exceeds 25 % in order to prevent the rise of the concentration of tripentaerythritol to be formed in the reaction, and at the same time crystallizing part of pentaerythritol to thereby prepare a reaction mixture containing an increased concentration of dipentaerythritol.
