Abstract:
[Problem] To provide a novel technique whereby the argon purge amount in a process for producing ethylene oxide can be further reduced. [Solution] A process for producing ethylene oxide which includes: a step in which reaction product gases containing ethylene oxide and yielded in an ethylene oxidation step for causing ethylene to undergo vapor-phase catalytic oxidation with a gas containing molecular oxygen in an ethylene oxidation reactor in the presence of a silver catalyst are supplied to an ethylene oxide absorption column and brought into contact with an absorbing liquid supplied to the ethylene oxide absorption column, and liquid bottoms in the ethylene oxide absorption column which contain ethylene oxide are supplied to an ethylene oxide purification system, where the ethylene oxide is purified; and a step in which at least some of carbon-dioxide-gas-containing gases discharged from the top of the ethylene oxide absorption column are supplied to a carbon dioxide gas absorption column and brought into contact with an absorbing liquid, and the resultant absorbing liquid enriched with carbon dioxide gas is withdrawn as liquid bottoms from the carbon dioxide gas absorption column and supplied to an upper part of a carbon dioxide gas stripping column, where the carbon dioxide gas is stripped from the absorbing liquid enriched with carbon dioxide gas, the stripped carbon dioxide gas being discharged as a discharge gas from the top of the carbon dioxide gas stripping column. The ethylene oxide production process is characterized in that the concentration of molecular oxygen (O2) in the molecular-oxygen-containing gas to be supplied to the system from the outside is 99.7 vol% or higher.
