Title:
PROCESS FOR PRODUCING GLYOXAL
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1984/000955
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
Glyoxal is produced in a high yield by bringing a gaseous mixture of ethylene glycol and molecular oxygen diluted with an inert gas into contact with a silver catalyst at high temperatures in the presence of phosphorus or a phosphorus compound to conduct gas phase oxidation. In this process, the use of powdery silver particles having a diameter of 1 x 10-3 mm or less as at least part of the silver catalyst serves to depress production of a reaction intermediate of glycolaldehyde and increase stability of the reaction.
