Abstract:
A process for producing a silica aerogel which includes a gelation step in which a monoalkyltrialkoxysilane is added to an acidic aqueous solution containing a surfactant to yield a sol and the sol is then caused to gel, thereby obtaining a wet gel. The production process further includes a separation step in which the wet gel is immersed in a mixed solvent composed of a first solvent and a second solvent, which is immiscible with the first solvent, thereby transferring the surfactant contained in the wet gel to the phase of the second solvent and transferring the wet gel to the phase of the first solvent. The first solvent has a value of ET
N of 0.5 or less, and the second solvent has a value of ET
N which is between that of the first solvent and that of water. The production process further includes a drying step in which the wet gel that has moved to the phase of the first solvent in the separation step is dried at a temperature lower than the critical temperature of the first solvent and at a pressure lower than the critical pressure thereof, thereby removing the first solvent from the wet gel.
