Abstract:

A process for producing polyarylene sulfide by heating a dihalogenated aromatic compound and an alkali metal sulfide in an organic amide solvent to conduct polymerization, which permits a remarkable reduction in the cooling time of the polymerization system. The polymerization step is followed by a cooling step for cooling the polymerization system composed of a liquid phase containing formed polyarylene sulfide and an organic amide solvent and a vapor phase containing a gaseous component (A), and in the cooling step, the gaseous component (A) contained in the vapor phase is cooled and the vapor phase is reduced in the content of low−boiling gaseous components (A1) which are contained in the gaseous component (A) and have boiling points lower than that of water.
