Abstract:
A process for continuous production of polyarylene sulfide (PAS) by reacting a sulfur source with a dihalogenated aromatic compound in an aprotic organic solvent, characterized by comprising at least one polymerization step wherein the reaction system consists of two separate phases, i.e., a dispersed polymer phase composed of polymer globules and a solvent phase, and by using a terminator in the polymerization step. According to the invention, the adhesion of the polymer to a polymerization tank can be inhibited, so that the polymer phase and the solvent phase can be discharged from the tank at a constant ratio to thereby keep the PAS concentration in the tank at a constant level, whereby a stabilized polyarylene sulfide having an enhanced molecular weight can be continuously produced.
