Abstract:
A cycloolefin having a specific polar group is polymerized by addition polymerization in a hydrocarbon solvent with the aid of a polymerization catalyst ingredient comprising (i) a specific transition metal compound, (ii) a Lewis acid compound, and (iii) an alkylaluminoxane to obtain a cycloolefin addition polymer. Alternatively, a cycloolefin is polymerized by addition polymerization in the hydrocarbon solvent with the aid of the polymerization catalyst ingredient in the presence of a molecular weight regulator comprising at least one aromatic vinyl compound or at least one cyclic unconjugated polyene compound or both to thereby obtain a cycloolefin addition polymer.
