Abstract:
The invention discloses a method of reducing iron oxide to recover iron from iron content mixture. The method includes the step of mixing a reductant containing at least one of a silicon carbide or ferro-silicon with iron content mixture and heating it at a temperature ranging from 600-1000º C for reaction to undergo. The iron content mixture is one of an iron ore, iron oxide and gangue material. The addition of reductant during the manufacture of sponge iron, DRI or pig iron or during reduction of iron ore assures advantages such as better yield,, efficient use of resources, thus resulting in increasing productivity and reducing the cost of manufacturing. The method converts and upgrades low grade iron ore to high grade iron ore by dry beneficiation magnetic separation. The method also helps in recovery of iron from slag generated during iron and steel production.
