Title:
PROFILE CUTTING TOOL FOR NON-ROUND PROFILES
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2014/193231
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The invention relates to a device which provides a new method of shortening non-round profiles in similar manner to existing pipe cutters for round pipes. The device comprises a rotating disc which rotates round the profile, and a cam track which is derived from the shape of the profile. These both lie more or less concentrically round the profile for cutting. The cutting wheel, the travelling roller and the handle are connected to a point on the rotating disc by means of a shaft around which they can rotate. The movements made by the travelling roller are in this way transmitted to the cutting wheel, which then follows the contours of the profile precisely. The travelling roller follows the above stated cam track. The device comprises an adjustment with which the radial position of the cutting wheel can be adjusted further inward or outward. The cutting wheel can hereby press an increasingly deeper cut all the way around into the profile for cutting. It is in this way possible to sever profiles on site without too much effort. No shavings are generated here.

CLAIMS

Claim 1:

A device comprising a rotating disc which can rotate freely round a profile holder comprising a profile for severing, and a cam track which is located more or less concentrically round the profile for cutting and which is attached to the profile holder, wherein mounted on the rotating disc rotating round the profile is a mechanism which comprises a cutting wheel which can make a more or less radially oriented movement relative to the rotating disc and which also comprises a travelling roller which also makes a more or less radially oriented movement relative to the rotating disc, wherein this travelling roller, the rotation shaft of which lies approximately parallel to the shaft of the rotating disc, rolls in a more or less concentric movement over said cam track round the profile for severing,

characterized in that:

the cutting wheel follows a path, wherein it takes up a radial position related to the travelling roller running over the cam track, which during rotation of the rotating disc approximately follows the outer contour of the profile for severing,

the device comprises an adjustment with which the related radial position of the cutting wheel can be adjusted further inward or outward,

due to the inward adjustment thereof the cutting wheel presses an increasingly deeper cut all the way around into the profile for severing.

Claim 2:

As claim 1, wherein the rotation shaft of the travelling roller lies at an angle of 90 degrees or less to the shaft of the rotating disc.

Claim 3:

As one or more of the foregoing claims, wherein the single travelling roller is replaced by a plurality of travelling rollers. Claim 4:

As one or more of the foregoing claims, further characterized in that one or more resetting springs press the travelling roller against the cam track.

Claim 5:

As one or more of the foregoing claims, further characterized in that the cam track and the profile holder are together interchangeable with a combination adapted to another profile. Claim 6:

As one or more of the foregoing claims, further characterized in that the profile holder is wholly or partially removable for easier placing or removal of the profile for cutting. Claim 7:

As one or more of the foregoing claims, further characterized in that the mechanism is provided with drive means.

Claim 8:

As one or more of the foregoing claims, wherein the characterizing adjusting mechanism adjusts the related radial position of the cutting wheel inward as a result of the rotating disc being rotated round the profile holder.

Description:
PROFILE CUTTING TOOL FOR NON-ROUND PROFILES

This invention provides a new method of shortening non-round profiles in similar manner to existing pipe cutters for round pipes.

Professional plumbers, fitters, plasterers and electrical technicians work on site with pipes and profiles. A pipe cutter is used to shorten round pipes. Saws are used for other profiles.

The existing pipe cutters make use of a wedge-shaped cutting wheel of hardened steel which cuts into the pipe all the way around. After a number of revolutions at a constant pressing force the pipe is cut through. The cutting force of the pipe cutter is supported here on the pipe wall diametrically opposite the position of the cutting wheel. A pipe cutter can cut pipes of different size by means of the adjustable cutting wheel. A pipe cutter has the advantage that it is quicker than sawing and that no external burrs are formed. A finishing process is therefore not usually necessary. An additional favourable circumstance is that no shavings are generated.

The pipe cutter can only cut round pipes. For shortening other types of profile shape there exists as yet no tool with which a profile can be shortened in simple manner without external burrs and shavings.

This problem can be solved by the profile cutting tool according to this invention. The profile cutting tool is based on the existing pipe cutter. Just as the existing pipe cutter, the profile cutting tool has a wedge-shaped cutting wheel. Where in the case of the pipe cutter the guiding and support run along the outer side of the pipe diametrically opposite the cutting wheel, the guiding of the profile cutting tool follows a cam track which is adapted to the shape of the profile.

The profile for cutting is placed in the profile holder. Present in the profile holder is a recess in the form of the profile. This centres the profile and holds it in place. If desired, the holder has a simple locking provision for fixing the profile. Located around the profile holder is an annular rotating disc. Between the rotating disc and the profile holder there is a bearing whereby the two parts can rotate relative to each other. Present at a point on the rotating disc is a shaft, parallel to the profile axis, which connects both the cutting wheel and the travelling roller and the handle. The movements made by the travelling roller are in this way transmitted to the cutting wheel, which then follows the profile precisely. The travelling roller follows a cam track which is derived from the shape of the profile. The cam track is formed integrally with the profile holder.

The cutting wheel can be moved along the profile using the handle. Rotating the handle about its longitudinal axis makes it possible to adjust the depth of the cutting wheel by means of a screw adjustment. This makes it possible to cut through the material uniformly. The pressure on the profile is in this way also limited to a minimum, whereby undesired and excessive bending of the profile wall is prevented.

With the profile cutting tool profiles can be cut on site quickly and without much effort. No shavings are generated here.

The invention will be further elucidated hereinbelow on the basis of an exemplary embodiment of the device according to the invention shown in figures.

Fig. 1 shows a three-dimensional view of the device.

Fig. 2 shows a front view of fig. 1.

Fig. 3 and fig. 4 show variations of the position of cutting mechanism 3-10.

Fig. 5 shows a cross-section through fig. 2.

Fig. 2 shows a specific profile 1 in a profile holder 2. The profile holder fixes the profile. Shown around profile holder 2 is a bearing 3 which connects profile holder 2 to a rotating disc 4. Rotating disc 4 and profile holder 2 can rotate relative to each other.

A guide arm 6 and a cutting arm 7 are mounted on rotating disc 4 by means of a shaft 5. Guide arm 6 and cutting arm 7 can rotate around shaft 5.

Rotating disc 4 can be rotated by means of a handle 1 1. During rotation of rotating disc 4 a travelling roller 8 on the outer end of guide arm 6 will follow a cam track 9. Cam track 9 is derived from the shape of profile 1. Cam track 9 and profile holder 2 form one whole. The movement of travelling roller 8 causes a cutting wheel 10, which is coupled to travelling roller 8, to run along the outer side of profile 1. Cam track 9 ensures that pressure is exerted continuously on profile 1 by cutting wheel 10 during rotation of rotating disc 4. Fig. 3 and fig. 4 show different positions during this rotation. It can be seen here that the path of travelling roller 8 ensures that cutting wheel 10 follows the outer side of profile 1 in different positions.

When handle 11, which is screwed fixedly into guide arm 6, is tightened the space between cutting arm 7 and guide arm 6 increases. Cutting wheel 10 will hereby displace inward, whereby the cut becomes deeper. It is in this way possible to cut through profile 1 with minimal physical effort.
