Provided are a projection display device capable of preventing a reduction in the image quality of displayed images due to variation in light distribution from a semiconductor light source, a method for controlling a projection display device, and a program for controlling a projection display device. An HUD 100 is provided with an R light source 12r; a G light source 12G; a B light source 12b; collimating lenses 13r, 13g, and 13b disposed in front of the light sources; fly-eye lenses 16 and 17 disposed along the light path of light emitted by the collimating lenses 13r, 13g, and 13b; a light modulation element 20 which carries out spatial modulation on light passing through the fly-eye lenses 16 and 17 on the basis of image information; a projection optical system 50 which projects, onto a projection surface 7, image light obtained from the spatial modulation by the light modulation element 20; light detection elements PD1 and PD2 which are affixed to part of the fly-eye lens 16; and an image light control unit 40B which controls the brightness distribution of the image light on the basis of the brightness of the light detected by the light detection elements PD1 and P2.
