This refrigeration cycle apparatus includes a low-pressure shell-type compressor that stores refrigerating machine oil, an oil reservoir that is connected by an oil drain pipe to the compressor and stores the refrigerating machine oil discharged from the compressor, an accumulator that stores the refrigerating machine oil discharged from the oil reservoir and supplies the refrigerating machine oil to the compressor, an oil return pipe that is connected to the oil reservoir and through which the refrigerating machine oil contained in a refrigerant ejected from the compressor flows, and an oil return valve that opens and closes the oil return pipe, wherein when the oil return valve is closed, the excess refrigerating machine oil in the compressor is discharged to the oil reservoir through the oil drain pipe, and when the oil return valve is open, the refrigerating machine oil contained in the ejected refrigerant flows into the oil reservoir from the oil return pipe, and the refrigerating machine oil stored in the oil reservoir is discharged to the accumulator.
