This regenerative fuel cell system (100) comprises: a fuel cell (1) whereby hydrogen from a hydrogen storage unit (11a) and oxygen from an oxygen storage unit (11b) are reacted to generate power; a water electrolysis device (7) whereby the water discharged from the fuel cell (1) is electrolyzed to generate hydrogen and oxygen; a first gas reaction device (9a) (first reaction unit) whereby the hydrogen generated at the water electrolysis device (7) is reacted with oxygen accompanying the hydrogen generated at the water electrolysis device (7), and the hydrogen remaining after the reaction is returned to the hydrogen storage unit (11a); a second gas reaction device (9b) (second reaction unit) whereby the oxygen generated at the water electrolysis device (7) is reacted with hydrogen accompanying the oxygen generated at the water electrolysis device (7), and the oxygen remaining after the reaction is returned to the oxygen storage unit (11b); a first valve (13a) installed in-line with the piping connecting the water electrolysis device (7) to the hydrogen storage unit (11a); and a second valve (14a) installed in-line with the piping connecting the water electrolysis device (7) to the oxygen storage unit (11b).
