Abstract:
Retractable projections (e.g., "chevrons") for aircraft nozzles, and associated systems and methods, are disclosed. Retracting or otherwise changing the exposure of the projections to one or more gas flows reduces the thrust penalties associated with the projections at flight conditions (such as cruise) for which the noise reduction produced by the projections may be of no benefit to aircraft certifiability. A representative aircraft nozzle includes a first flow duct aligned along a longitudinal axis and having a first exit perimeter, and a second flow duct aligned along the longitudinal axis and having a second exit perimeter. At least one of the first and second perimeters include multiple projections. The projections have a first configuration in which opposing surfaces of the projections are positioned to be exposed to different gas flows, and a second configuration in which at least one of the surfaces is not exposed to a gas flow.
