Abstract:
A separator that can be used in secondary batteries such as nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, and a secondary battery containing said separator are provided. The separator comprises a first layer formed from a porous polyolefin, and a parameter X, calculated with the expression below from MDtanδ, the tanδ of MD, and TDtanδ, the tanδ of TD, obtained by viscoelasticity measurement at a frequency of 10 Hz and a temperature of 90°C, is less than or equal to 20. The tear strength of the first layer measured with the Elmendorf tear method (in accordance with JIS K 7128-2) is greater than or equal to 1.5 mN/μm, and in the load-tensile elongation curve in tear strength measurement (in accordance with JIS K 7128-3) of the first layer with the right-angled tear method, the value of tensile elongation E from when the load reaches maximum load until said load lessens to 25% of maximum load is greater than or equal to 0.5 mm.
