The present invention relates to a side door opening and closing apparatus for an automobile, the apparatus being capable of automatically opening and closing a side door of the automobile with respect to the automobile body. The apparatus comprises: a housing installed and fixed to the side door and having an accommodation space therein; a driving motor located inside the accommodation space of the housing and having a driving shaft; a worm gear connected to the driving shaft and rotating together with the driving shaft; a worm wheel which is engaged with and coupled to the worm gear and can rotate by receiving rotational force from the worm gear; a pinion gear rotating in engagement with the worm wheel; and a rack gear having one end hinge-connected to the vehicle body, the rack gear being engaged with the pinion gear and converting the rotational motion of the pinion gear to linear motion. The worm gear has a switchable structure that can receive the rotational force of the worm wheel and rotate when the worm wheel rotates. The worm gear rotates the worm wheel when the driving motor rotates in an automatic mode, and the worm gear can be rotated by the rotating worm wheel when a user manually rotates the door in manual mode.
