A sintered compact the main components of which are alumina crystal grains and zirconia crystal grains contains tetragonal crystal grains for the zirconia crystal grains. In addition, letting N be the total number of zirconia crystal grains in the range of any 10 µm square cross-sectional surface of the sintered compact and letting A - C be the respective proportions for a, the number of first zirconia crystal grains the periphery of which are surrounded only by zirconia crystal grains, b, the number of second zirconia crystal grains the periphery of which are surrounded only by alumina crystal grains, and c, the number of third zirconia crystal grains the periphery of which are surrounded by zirconia crystal grains and alumina crystal grains, 0% ≤ A ≤ 3%, 3% ≤ B ≤ 22%, and 77% ≤ C ≤ 96% are satisfied. In addition, the value for N is 140 or greater.
