Abstract:
A paper softener with which paper which is excellent in softness and water absorption and can give a humectant feeling even in a high-temperature atmosphere can be obtained. The paper softener comprises (a) an amide-amine compound and/or a salt thereof and (b) a polyhydric alcohol, wherein the amide-amine compound is obtained by reacting one or more C10-24 carboxylic acids comprising 40-100 mass% carboxylic acid(s) having an unsaturated bond and/or a branch with a polyamine represented by the general formula NH2-(R1-NH)n-R2-NH2, the amount of the carboxylic acids being 1.5 to 2.5 mol per mol of the polyamine, the amide-amine compound has a tertiary amine value/total amine value ratio of from 0.60 to 0.99, and the proportion of the amide-amine compound and/or salt thereof (a) to the polyhydric alcohol (b), (a)/(b), is from 1/99 to 35/65 by mass.
