Abstract:

The problem addressed by the present invention is to provide a spark plug equipped with a noble metal tip that has the desired durability, specifically a noble metal tip that is superior in terms of peeling resistance, resistance to wear, and resistance to tip cracking. The spark plug is characterized in that (1) the total content of Mp (Mp is an element group consisting of Pt, or Pt and Pd, with Pd constituting no more than 20 mass% of the mass of the noble metal tip), Cu, and M (M is at least one element selected from an element group consisting of Rh, Ir, Ru, Re and W) is 95 mass% or higher, and the mass ratios of Mp, Cu, and M are within a specified range; or (2) in that the mass ratios (Mp, Cu, M) of the aforementioned Mp, Cu, and M are within a specified range, and the welding area (S, mm2), tip protrusion dimension (H, mm), covering dimension (L, mm) and tip/welding sector distance (h, mm) satisfy the following conditions. (a) H≤0.13S+1.18, (b) S≤5, (c) 0.1≤h, or 0.03≤L
