The present invention relates to a super absorbent polymer and a preparation method thereof. More specifically, the present invention relates to: a super absorbent polymer which exhibits an improved absorption rate since particles thereof have an aspect ratio greater than or equal to a certain level and a large roughness; and a super absorbent polymer preparation method capable of preparing the super absorbent polymer.
