Title:
SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNET
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2004/079831
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A superconducting magnet in which the refrigeration load on an external refrigerating machine is reduced by preventing or suppressing intrusion of heat into the magnet when a switching is made to a permanent current mode and the switching operation can be carried out quickly. In the superconducting magnet (1), a thermal superconducting switch (41) arranged in a low temperature region and a mechanical switch (42) arranged in an intermediate temperature region are turned on when a switching is made to the permanent current mode. Since the mechanical switch (42) is arranged in the intermediate temperature region, it is not required to be cooled down again to a cryogenic temperature even if a thermal load is generated through a drive mechanism (60). In other words, since heat generated at the contact of the mechanical switch (42) and heat intruding from the drive mechanism (60) are loaded not to the low temperature region but to the intermediate temperature region, the external refrigerating machine can absorb the thermal load easily and thereby the capacity of the refrigerating machine can be reduced.
