Abstract:

The present invention is a surface-treated sol-gel silica particle manufacturing method that includes: a step (A1) for obtaining hydrophilic sol-gel silica particles that have a silanol group on the surface thereof and are substantially constituted by SiO2 units; a step (A2) for obtaining pretreated silica particles by adding a compound having a (C2H5)3Si-group or an R1R2 2Si-group (R1 being an alkyl group or alkenyl group having 2-8 carbon atoms or an aryl group having 6-8 carbon atoms, and R2 being the same or a different substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms), and introducing a (C2H5)3SiO1/2 unit or an R12 2SiO1/2 unit onto the surface of the hydrophilic sol-gel silica particles; and a step (A3) for obtaining surface-treated sol-gel silica particles by adding a compound having an R3 3Si-group (R3 being a substituted or unsubstituted monovalent hydrocarbon group having 1-6 carbon atoms), and also introducing an R3 3SiO1/2 unit onto the surface of the pretreated silica particles. As a result, provided are: surface-treated sol-gel silica particles which are capable of imparting favorable fluidity if added to a toner and which change little when the environment changes; a manufacturing method therefor; and a toner external additive comprising said surface-treated sol-gel silica particles.
