Abstract:
A surge absorber and a surge absorbing circuit exhibiting high insulation performance in which a surge voltage can be suppressed to a low level and an insulation performance test can be conducted without disconnecting the earth connection of an apparatus. The surge absorber comprises a discharge gap element having first and second electrodes forming a first discharge gap and a third electrode forming, between it and the second electrode, a second discharge gap producing a lower discharge start voltage than that of the first discharge gap, a first impedance element connected between the first and second electrodes and exhibiting low impedance characteristics in the high frequency region and high impedance characteristics in the low frequency region, and a second impedance element connected between the second and third electrodes and exhibiting high impedance characteristics in the high frequency region and low impedance characteristics in the low frequency region. AC voltages of low frequencies, e.g. commercial power supply frequencies, and DC voltages are applied mostly to the first discharge gap side whereas surge voltages containing high frequency components are applied mostly to the second discharge gap side.
