Abstract:
A system for operating a mobile platform by detecting objects proximate to the mobile platform and methods for making and using same. The system includes one or more sensors (such as a time-of-flight sensor and/or an ultrasound sensor) for measuring distances between the mobile platform and the objects. Multiple distance measurements taken at positions along a trajectory of the mobile platform can be used to determine positions of the objects using a batch of distance measurement using a least square method. The positions of the objects can also be determined in real time as new distance measurements are received using a Kalman filter. The systems and methods can advantageously obtain directional information regarding the objects based on distance measurements that individually lack directional information. The present systems and methods are particularly suitable for obstacle detection and avoidance during operation of unmanned aerial vehicles.
