Abstract:
Extracts of Tanacetum parthenium with a reduced content of $g(a)-unsaturated $g(g)-lactons, particularly of parthenolide, obtainable by elution on basic resins. The extracts of the invention have favourable pharmacological properties together with reduced risks of allergic reactions.

CLAIMS
| 1. | Tanacetum parthenium extracts substantially free from aunsaturated vlactons. |
| 2. | Tanacetum parthenium extracts substantially free from parthenolide. |
| 3. | Extracts as claimed in claim 1 or 2, having a content of aunsaturated ylactons below 0.2%. |
| 4. | Extracts as claimed in claim 3 having a content of aunsaturated ylactons below 0.1%. |
| 5. | Extracts according to any one of the above claims obtainable by a process which comprises: a) extracting the plant (aerial parts) with acetone, alcohols or mixtures of these solvents with water; b) extracting the material from step a) with hydrocarbons; c) extracting the nonhydrocarbon phase with an apolar solvent; d) treating the extract with the apolar solvent, previously evaporated and redissolved in water alcoholic solution, with a strong basic resin; e) eluting the resin with alcohols and removing the eluted solution; f) treating the resin with alcoholic or water alcoholic solutions of acids, concentrating the solution and extracting the resulting residue with an apolar solvent; g) evaporating the apolar solvent from step f) to give a residue which is added to the residue from the evaporation of the hydrocarbon extract from step b) and to the acetonic or alcoholic phase obtained after the extraction with the apolar solvent of step c); h) evaporating and drying. |
| 6. | Pharmaceutical compositions containing the extracts of claims 15 in admixture with suitable carriers. |
| 7. | Oral cosmetic compositions containing as active ingredient the extracts of claims 15 in admixture with suitable carriers. |
