Abstract:
A temperature-compensating optical fiber strain gauge with a variable range. In the temperature-compensating optical fiber strain gauge, a second FBG can be used for temperature sensing. In addition, the temperature-compensating optical fiber strain gauge is easily manufactured and assembled and is compact. A measurement range can be changed by means of changing the overall size of the temperature-compensating optical fiber strain gauge, or by simply changing the size ratio of internal parts thereof, keeping the total length unchanged, and applying the same standard design to FBGs themselves. Therefore, it is possible to make the performance and form factors of the temperature-compensating optical fiber strain gauge similar to those of a commercial resistance strain gauge, and make the temperature-compensating optical fiber strain gauge have other inherent advantages of an optical fiber sensor, such as the resistance to an electromagnetic interference and the insensitivity to a change in lead resistance. In addition, the FBGs are short and the maximum strain experienced by the FBGs is small, which greatly reduces the possibility of optical fiber breakage, thereby improving the long-term reliability; and the requirement for recoating FBGs is eliminated to the greatest extent, thereby simplifying a manufacturing process. The design of FBGs of all gauges is standardized, comprising the lengths and periods of the FBGs, thereby facilitating mass production, and facilitating the reduction of the manufacturing costs.
