Provided are a transfer device and a transfer method which are capable of picking up an object on a conveyance path without applying a load on the object. A transfer device according to one embodiment transfers an object to be conveyed in a first conveyance path from a first position in the first conveyance path to a second position which is a destination, the transfer device comprising a holding hand configured to be able to hold and release the object and to approach or depart from the first conveyance path, wherein the object on the first conveyance path is held by causing the holding hand to approach the first conveyance path while moving the holding hand in the same direction as the conveyance direction of the object at the first position. The holding hand holding the object is spaced apart from the first conveyance path while moving the holding hand in the same direction as the conveyance direction of the object at the first position.
