Abstract:
The present invention provides a transmissive liquid crystal diffraction element which has a large diffraction angle and high diffraction efficiency. This transmissive liquid crystal diffraction element is provided with a plurality of optically anisotropic layers, each of which is formed using a liquid crystal composition that contains a liquid crystal compound, in the thickness direction; each optically anisotropic layer has a liquid crystal alignment pattern wherein the direction of the optical axis derived from the liquid crystal compound changes, while continuously rotating along at least one in-plane direction; one direction of the plurality of optically anisotropic layers are parallel to each other; with respect to two optically anisotropic layers which are adjacent to each other among the plurality of optically anisotropic layers, the direction of rotation of the optical axis in the liquid crystal alignment pattern of one optically anisotropic layer is opposite to the direction of rotation of the optical axis in the liquid crystal alignment pattern of the other optically anisotropic layer; each of the plurality of optically anisotropic layers has a light part and a dark part, which extend from one surface to the other surface, in a cross-sectional image as obtained by observing, with a scanning-type electronic microscope, a cross-section thereof cut in the thickness direction along one direction; and the inclination angles of the dark parts of the plurality of optically anisotropic layers sequentially change in the thickness direction.
