Abstract:
Provided are a travel control device and a travel control method that enable a vehicle to avoid a collision with another vehicle even in the event that a preceding vehicle makes a major lateral movement in an automatic follow-up control mode of the vehicle. This travel control device comprises: an automatic follow-up control unit which controls the acceleration/deceleration and steering amount of a vehicle so as to follow up a preceding vehicle; and a steering amount suppression unit which, in a case where a detection unit for detecting a vehicle at a rear lateral side of the vehicle has detected another vehicle at the rear lateral side of the vehicle, suppresses the steering amount in a direction opposite to the direction in which the other vehicle has been detected.
