WIPO Patent Application WO/2011/062515
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The subject of the invention is a two-piece safety seat belt. The structure of the belt is such that it allows a full release from the seat belt when needed (after an accident has taken place when releasing the belt from the main lock is impossible). 2. The seat belt according to the invention is characterised in that: it comprises of the two A and B sections.

3. The seat belt according to the invention is characterised in that: it is fitted with an emergency clamp buckle positioned in the horizontal part of the strapping. The emergency clamp buckle joins the A and B belt sections.

4. The seat belt according to the invention is characterised in that: the feedthrough opening in the belt's sliding plug-in tongue of the main lock is slightly enlarged, which allows a free movement of the belt inside the opening.

5. The ..seat belt according to the invention is characterised in that: in new structures of the rolling mechanism for belt rolling is strengthened to streamline the system.

6. The seat belt according to the invention is characterised in that: the joining of the sections A and B of the seat belt can be done using a self-adhesive hook-and-loop fasteners of suitable strength.

7. The seat belt according to the invention is characterised in that: the end of the A section of the belt does not need a plug-in tongue as it is the case with the P 378316 project.

8. The seat belt according to the invention is characterised in that: the mounting of the belt does not require structure changes in a vehicle design (chassis) as it is the case with the P 378316 project where some interference into the car structure is inescapable due to the necessity of drilling holes, fitting in the lock, screws, etc.

Description:
TWO-PIECE SAFETY SEAT BELT

Technology knows safety belt solutions commonly applied in motor vehicles. Moreover, the ' three-point safety seat belt with two release buckles is known from the patent description no. P 378316. The P 378316 design with two buckles allows partial release of the body from the belt in the event of the main lock failure The object of the invention is a two-piece safety seat belt. The belt's design is such that it enables a complete release from the seat belt when needed (after an accident, when disconnecting the main buckle is impossible). An advantage of this belt, according to the invention, lies in the fact that there is no need to cut the belts. An individual involved in an accident with, for instance, a fractured arm, is unable to reach the main lock, stays trapped in the seat belt and has to wait until the rescue services arrive with belt cutting devices. The P 378316 belt partially solves this problem by way of an extra buckle which releases a passenger from the horizontal latch but the diagonal strapping remains on. Next, a person involved in an accident must put the diagonal strapping over their head in order to get out of the seat belt. The new safety belt design according to the invention eliminates this problem completely. An example of the invention project is presented in the attached drawings. The two-pieces safety seat belt, as indicated by the name, consists of two pieces: the diagonal strap A Fig. 1 and the horizontal strap B. Both the A and B belt sections are connected with a clamp buckle no. 1 Fig. 1. The A section of the belt is connected with the rolling mechanism no. 3 Fig. 1 and then threaded through a slightly enlarged opening in the sliding plug-in tongue no. 2 slid into the main lock. Next, the end of the A section of the belt is joined with the end of the belt's B section with a clamp buckle Fig. 2. The structure of the buckle is such that the greater the tension force of the belt's A and B sections, the greater the clamping of the buckle no. 1 Fig. 2 which makes disconnecting of the belt's ends during an impact (accident) impossible.

EMERGENCY RELEASE FROM THE SEAT BELT AND MOUNTING OF THE CLAMP

BUCKLE

The? two-piece safety seat belt is special due to the clamp buckle placed in the diagonal strapping section no. 1 Fig. 1 hereinafter referred to as the emergency buckle. An individual involved in an accident who for some reasons is unable to reach the main lock and, by doing this, release themselves from the seat belt, has no alternative but wait for help provided by a third party (in the case of traditional seat belts) that will cut the belt. Having applied the belt according to the invention, the problem in question is fully solved. A person involved in an accident has at their disposal an emergency clamp buckle no. 1 Fig.l which is released manually. Next, the rolling mechanism no. 3 rolls up the A section of the belt inside. This is possible because the end of the A section of the belt does not end with a sliding plug-in tongue as it is the case with the P 378316 project. In addition, it is made possible by the fact, that the opening in the sliding plug-in tongue of for the main lock no. 2 Fig.l is slightly enlarged, which allows the A Fig. 3 section of the belt to move quite freely. These solutions mean that after the emergency clamp buckle is unfastened the passenger gets fully released from the seat belt, and not partially as it happens in the case of the P 378316 project.

An advantage according to the invention is that even an accidental witness to the incident can get people involved in it out with no necessity of cutting the seat belts off.

It takes rescue units a few or more minutes to arrive at the scene whereas for an accident victim waiting for help it is a very long time. Nowadays ,attempts are being made to solve the problem of getting clear of the seat belt by production and sale of special knives designed to cut belts. It is a very primitive solution since a person involved in an accident immediately after it happens is in a state of shock and unable to think where to find such a knife and even more so about where to cut the belt. Neither is an accidental witness in the habit of carrying a knife for cutting seat belts or some other tool to serve this purpose. The two-piece safety belt solves this problem fully and at a very low cost. Another advantage of the seat belt according to the invention is easy process of mounting the emergency clamp buckle. In practice, after cutting it through and dividing into sections A and B and then mounting of an emergency clamp buckle, every now existing seat belt becomes a two-piece seat belt according to the invention. In the case of the P 378316 project car manufacturers oppose implementing the project arguing that it will increase the production costs (retooling of the production line, etc.) The seat belt according to the invention solves this problem because having obtained a certificate of approval and appropriate attestation for the project, the mounting of the belt (clamp buckle) can take place in specialised service points and will not require a manufacturer's permit. The decision of mounting an emergency buckle will be made by a vehicle owner, not a car factory owner.

The mounting of the emergency buckle ought to take place by cutting the belt in the horizontal section of the strapping and, by doing so, dividing it into A and B sections. Next, the ends of both the A and B sections should be secured to prevent fraying. This could be done by heating both ends (or trimming). Next, the clamp buckle is permanently fixed at the end of B section. The mounting of the clamp can be done by way of rivets or clamp, depending on the buckle structure. Then, the feedthrough opening in the sliding plug-in tongue of the main lock is slightly enlarged so that the belt can move through the opening freely. The opening enlargement can be done in a simple manner, for instance by filing . it up with a file. After this, the A section of the belt is threaded through the enlarged opening of the plug-in tongue and then sections A and B are connected by clamping the buckle.

At this moment an ordinary seat belt turns into a two-piece seat belt with an emergency clamp.

In the case of new seat belt designs, the force of the reel can be slightly increased. Another solution to the same problem can be the application of a self-adhesive hook-and- loop fastener instead of the buckle. The latest achievements in the field of self-adhesive hook-and-loop fasteners have given them very good tensile strength properties while they remain easy to fasten and unfasten.

The data on tensile strength of self-adhesive fasteners come from a scientific TV series. The researcher s hanged a weight of 1,000 kg on a belt joined with a hook-and-loop fastener and it easily stood the test. This experiment provides ground to assume that this type of hook-and-loop fasteners can also be used in vehicle seat belts.
