Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may receive a bundling configuration for time domain bundling of uplink DMRS symbols across a set of slots within a bundling cycle, and may transmit a DMRS within a first slot within the bundling cycle. The UE may transmit the DMRS in a way that indicates that the DMRS symbol or symbols within the first slot are unbundled from DMRS symbols within slots preceding the first slot. A base station may receive the DMRS, and may decode a data channel of the first slot based on the received DMRS. In some examples, the UE may transmit an indication of a non-bundled DMRS symbol pattern, and the non-bundled DMRS symbol pattern may indicate that the DMRS symbols within a first slot are unbundled from DMRS symbols within slots preceding the first slot within the bundling cycle.
