A vacuum cleaner, according to one embodiment, comprises: a main body; a suction motor in the main body; an extension tube; a suction head connected to the suction motor through the extension tube and comprising a suction port through which foreign bodies are suctioned; a brush inside the suction head; a brush motor for rotating the brush; a pressure sensor for detecting the pressure of air flowing through the suction port; a memory for storing reference data which is used to identify the type of a surface to be cleaned, and a learning model which is for updating the reference data; and a control unit for determining suction pressure on the basis of the detected pressure and atmospheric pressure, and identifying the type of a surface to be cleaned making contact with the suction head, by using the determined suction pressure, the load of the brush motor and the stored reference data, wherein the control unit updates the stored reference data on the basis of a predetermined update condition.
