Abstract:
A valve mechanism for an internal combustion engine is provided with: a cam (2) that rotates in conjunction with the rotation of a crankshaft; an engine valve (30) that is lifted along with the rotation of the cam (2) and opens; a lift quantity variation mechanism (10) that is disposed between the cam (2) and the engine valve (30) and varies the maximum amount of lift of the engine valve (30); and a lost-motion mechanism (50) that is disposed between the cam (2) and the engine valve (30) and that absorbs the quantity of lift of the engine valve (30) by itself contracting when drive force is received from the cam (2), keeping the engine valve (30) in a closed state. The maximum quantity of contraction of the lost-motion mechanism (50) is set to a size that will absorb the minimum value for the maximum lift quantity of the engine valve (30).
