Abstract:
A valve operating device for an internal combustion engine, in which switching of operation modes is quickly and reliably performed. The valve operating device has a first rocker arm (4) connected to an air intake valve or an exhaust valve and supported on a rocker shaft (3a); a second rocker arm (5) rockingly driven by a cam and supported on the rocker shaft (3a); a cylinder (10) formed in either of the first and second rocker arms (4, 5); a first piston (11) provided in the cylinder (10); a contact projection (4a) projectedly provided on the other of the first and second rocker arms (4, 5); a return spring (12) for urging the first piston (11) in the direction in which the projection (4a) comes in contact with the first piston (11); and a second piston (14) for causing the first piston (11) to be displaced to a position at which the projection (4a) is not in contact with the first piston (11). The two pistons (11, 14) are arranged so that they are in parallel to each other when the first piston (11) is at a non-contact position.
