A vertical washing machine, which is able to smoothly implement a process of pushing water upward by means of rotation of a washing tub and spraying water into the washing tub to shorten washing time, and to inhibit laundry from coming out of the washing tub due to the process. The vertical washing machine (1) comprises an outer tub (3), a washing tub (4) and a pulsator (5). Executing the following processes in at least one of the washing process and the rinsing process: an agitation process, in which water is injected into the washing tub (4) and the pulsator (5) rotates to agitate laundry (Q); a spreading-out process, in which water is injected into the washing tub (4) and the pulsator (5) rotates to spread out the laundry (Q); and a tub rotating process, in which the washing tub (4) is rotated to push the water in the outer tub (3) upward, so that the water is sprayed on the laundry (Q) in the washing tub (4). In cases where the load of the laundry (Q) is higher than a specified value, a coming-out inhibition process for inhibiting the laundry (Q) from coming out of the washing tub (4) is executed at least one of before and after the rotation of the washing tub (4) in the tub rotating process.
