Disclosed is a vertical washing machine (1) capable of aiming at improving the spreadability of washed objects (Q) after a water removal operation. The vertical washing machine (1) comprises: a motor (6); a rotating drum (4) for receiving the driving force of the motor (6) to rotate; a rotating wing (5) arranged in the rotating drum (4) on a bottom wall (4B) of the rotating drum (4) for receiving the driving force of the electric motor (6) to rotate; and a control unit (21) for rotating the rotating drum (4) and the rotating wing (5) by controlling the motor (6). The control unit (21) performs a water removal operation for removing water from the washed objects (Q) in the rotating drum (4) by rotating the rotating drum (4) at a prescribed water removal speed and a flattening operation for flattening the washed objects (Q) in the rotating drum (4) after the water removal operation. The control unit (21) performs peeling treatment of peeling the washed objects (Q) from the inner peripheral surface of the rotating drum (4) by means of repeated forward and reverse rotation of the rotating wing (5) in the flattening operation and an unfastening treatment in which the rotating drum (4) rotates at the unfastening rotating speed lower than the water removal rotation speed so as to unfasten entwined washed objects (Q) in the rotating drum (4) after peeling treatment.
