Abstract:

A washing machine, the auxiliary door of which can be used safely and conveniently, and a method for controlling the same, are proposed. An auxiliary door is provided such that laundry can be additionally introduced, and the auxiliary door can be safely locked/unlocked. Furthermore, as the auxiliary door is locked/unlocked, the opening/closing status of the auxiliary door can be indirectly determined such that, even if the door opening/closing detection device malfunctions, the auxiliary door can be used safely. In addition, the auxiliary door is unlocked by default while the washing machine is operating, and conditions under which the auxiliary door is locked for safety, as needed, are minimized. Accordingly, the auxiliary door can be used with improved convenience, and the auxiliary door remains locked, according to the amount of laundry (amount of clothes), such that laundry can be introduced safely. Furthermore, if the auxiliary door is opened while the washing machine is operating, the amount of laundry is detected again, and performance of washing additional laundry is guaranteed through additional water supply and increased time, thereby improving the user's trust in the product.
