Abstract:
In a wire grid type polarizing element according to the present invention, metal reflectors (B) are embedded in a large number of grooves (C) provided on the surface of a transparent sheet (A) in a one-dimensional grid pattern in the same direction and at the same period, the average width (a) of the metal reflectors (B) is 200 nm or less, the ratio (b/a) of the average thickness (b) of the metal reflectors (B) from the front surface side of the sheet (A) to the tip in the back surface direction to the average width (a) is 4-25 (inclusive), in any cross section perpendicular to the front surface of the sheet (A), the shape of the metal reflector (B) near the tip in the thickness direction becomes thinner along a straight line or a smooth curved line toward the tip, and the ratio (c/a) of the average length (c) of the portion (D) that gradually becomes thinner toward the tip to the average width (a) is 1.2 or more.
