Title:
WIRELESS SUBSCRIBER UNIT AND METHOD FOR MANAGING SMART CARD DATA
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2000/046709
Kind Code:
A2
Abstract:
A wireless subscriber unit (30) includes a memory manager (46) capable of communicating with a plurality of smart cards (44). The memory manager (46) is programmed to allocate a memory segment (48) to each smart card (44) when it is operatively connected to an interface (42) of the wireless subscriber unit (30). The memory manager (46) communicates with the smart card (44) to update data (50) stored in the memory segment (48).

CLAIMS
1. A wireless subscriber unit capable of receiving a message from a wireless communication system and capable of communicating with a smart card, comprising: a receiver for receiving the message; a message processor coupled to the receiver for processing the message; a memory coupled to the message processor for storing the message, the memory having a plurality of memory segments; an interface for receiving a data from the smart card ; and a memory manager coupled to the memory and coupled to the interface, the memory manager allocating a memory segment to the smart card in response to the interface receiving the data from the smart card.
2. A wireless subscriber unit capable of receiving a message from a wireless communication system and capable of communicating with a plurality of smart cards, comprising: a receiver for receiving the message; a message processor coupled to the receiver for processing the message; a memory coupled to the message processor for storing the message, the memory having a plurality of memory segments; an interface for receiving an individual data from each of a plurality of smart cards; and a memory manager coupled to the memory and coupled to the interface for assigning an individual memory segment to a smart card in response to the interface receiving the individual data from the smart card.
3. A wireless subscriber unit capable of receiving a message from a wireless communication system and capable of communicating with a smart card, comprising: a receiver for receiving the message; a message processor coupled to the receiver for processing the message; a memory coupled to the message processor for storing the message, the memory having a plurality of memory segments; an interface for receiving a data from the smart card; a memory manager coupled to the memory and coupled to the interface for assigning a memory segment to the smart card; and an annunciator coupled to the memory manager for notification that the memory segment is full.
4. In a wireless subscriber unit capable of receiving a message from a wireless communication system, the wireless subscriber unit having an interface for communicating with a smart card, a method for managing the data for a plurality of smart cards, comprising: receiving a first data from a first smart card; storing the first data in a first memory segment; receiving a second data from a second smart card; and storing the second data in a second memory segment.
5. A method for managing the data for a plurality of smart cards as recited in claim 4, further comprising: receiving a third data from the first smart card, and responding thereto by the wireless subscriber unit; and substituting the third data for the first data in the first memory segment.
6. A method for managing the data for a plurality of smart cards as recited in claim 4, wherein each memory segment includes a location, the method further comprising: communicating the location of the first memory segment to the first smart card.
7. A method for managing the data for a plurality of smart cards as recited in claim 6, wherein the location of the first memory segment is communicated to the first smart card in response to the first smart card being operatively connected to the interface.
8. A method for managing the data for a plurality of smart cards as recited in claim 4, wherein each memory segment includes a memory segment size, the method further comprising: receiving the first memory segment size from the first smart card in response to the first smart card being operatively connected to the interface.
9. A method for managing the data for a plurality of smart cards as recited in claim 4, wherein the wireless subscriber unit is capable of receiving a first message on a first communication channel, and a second message on a second communication channel, and wherein the first data packet received from the first smart card includes a new first communication channel, the method further comprising: updating the operation of the wireless subscriber unit to receive the first message on the new first communication channel.
10. In a wireless subscriber unit capable of receiving a message from a wireless communication system, the wireless subscriber unit having an interface for communicating with a smart card and having a memory including a plurality of memory segments, a method for managing the data for the smart card, comprising: operatively connecting the smart card to the interface; assigning an individual memory segment to the smart card; receiving a data from the smart card; and storing the data in the individual memory segment.
11. A method for managing the data for a smart card as recited in claim 10 further comprising: receiving a memory segment size from the smart card after the connecting step; and partitioning the assigned individual memory segment to the memory segment size.
12. A method for managing the data for a smart card as recited in claim 10, wherein the wireless subscriber unit is capable of receiving a message on a communications channel, and wherein the data received from the smart card includes a new communication channel, the method further comprising: updating the operation of the wireless subscriber unit to receive the message on the new communication channel.
