Abstract:

A reductase gene of an &agr -substituted-&agr ,β -unsaturated carbonyl compound which contains a DNA sequence encoding the amino acid sequence represented by SEQ ID NO:20 and the amino acid sequence represented by SEQ ID NO:21; an enzyme which is the product of the gene; a plasmid and a transformant containing the gene DNA; and a method of reducing an &agr -substituted-&agr ,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound using the transformant. Thus, it is intended to provide an enzyme gene which is useful in hydrogenating the carbon-carbon double bond in an &agr -substituted carbonyl compound having an &agr ,β-carbon-carbon double bond, which is a compound prochiral at the &agr -position, to give the corresponding &agr -substituted-&agr ,β-saturated carbonyl compound optically active at the &agr -position, and an enzyme which is the gene product.
