PURPOSE: To ensure the automatic stoppage of a wiper blade, by effecting control to automatically stop the wiper blade when it is judged that clinging liquid of raindrops or the like remains unwiped-off due to the defect of the wiper blade.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid sensor 20 comprising a light emitter 21 and a light receiver 22 is provided on a part of a wiped-off region on the inside 10b of a windshield 10. The light emitter 21 and the light receiver 22 are mounted at a prescribed distance from each other so that their optical axes are inclined at prescribed angles to the surface of the winshield. The reflected quantity of light from the emitter 21 differs between the case that no raindrop is clinging to a crossing point 10c on the outside 10a of the windshield and the case that a raindrop is clinging to the crossing point. The change in the reflected quantity of light is detected through the light receiver 22, the output of which is applied to a microcomputer 50 through an output circuit 40. A wiper motor 14 is stopped when the microcomputer 50 has judged that the change in the reflected quantity of light has indicated the presence of clinging liquid remaining unwiped-off due to the defect or the like of a wiper blade.
