When a locking-up condition comes in effect while a coasting state is kept under an off-accelerator and locking-up of the lock-up clutch is released, a predetermined engagement threshold Non as a value being smaller as a gearshift step G shifts to a lower speed side as a rotation speed difference between engine rotation speed Ne generating no shocks in locking-up of the lock-up clutch and input shaft rotation speed Nin is set according to gearshift steps G (S100), and locking-up control starts when a rotation speed difference ΔN becomes the engagement threshold Non or below (S150). Thus, the shocks generated upon locking-up the lock-up clutch at any gearshift steps can be suppressed.
