This internal combustion engine capable of being operated in a spark ignition operation mode, a two-stroke cycle compression ignition operation mode, or a four-stroke cycle compression ignition operation mode, comprises operating state detecting means 21, 22 for detecting an operating state of the internal combustion engine, and a control means 30 for controlling the operation of the internal combustion engine by switching three operation modes in accordance with the operating state of the internal combustion engine. The control means 30 controls the internal combustion engine in the spark ignition operation mode in starting, in the two-stroke cycle compression ignition operation mode until a water temperature of the engine is raised to a specific temperature after the starting, and in the four-stroke cycle compression ignition operation mode, when the water temperature of the engine is over the specific temperature.
