To provide a device and method for changing work rolls which accurately control the height 41 of the center axis of the drive-side distal end of a work roll to a target height when supporting the work-side end parts of the upper and lower work rolls 21 in a cantilever manner with a porter eye 12 of a work roll changing truck 11.

The device for changing work rolls has a position detecting device 1 for detecting the position of the lower end of the drive-side work-roll chock of a lower work roll 21b in a rolling machine side of a shifting car 17. One-end of each of the work rolls 21 placed on a shifting car is supported by a porter eye 12 in a cantilever manner, the drive sides of the work rolls 21 are lifted and the position of the lower end of the drive-side work-roll chock of the lower work roll 21b is detected with the position detecting device 1. On and after that, the drive-side height of the work rolls is determined on the basis of the detected value of the position of the lower end of the work roll chock, which is detected with the position detecting device 1.
