To provide a device for predicting the self-ignition in an internal combustion engine, which device can accurately predict the generation of the self-ignition.
Operating conditions of the internal combustion engine are set, and the variation of the pressure and temperature in cylinders under the set operating conditions is simulated. Further, the rate of residual gas under the set operating conditions is calculated. Then, the time lag of the self-ignition is obtained based on the simulated variation of the pressure and temperature in cylinders, and the generation of the self-ignition is predicted by integrating the inverse of the time lag of the self-ignition. In this case, the value of parameters B to be used in calculating the time lag of the self-ignition is set according to the temperature in cylinders and the rate of residual gas.
