Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a self-suported reinforced preform.
CONSTITUTION: A preform for impregnation of a metal or ceramic matrix material is comprised of a plurality of reinforcement particles bonded together. The reinforcement particles constitute a three-dimensional, open-cell type reticulum 2 provided with a plurality of randomly oriented thread-like portions 4 interconnected with each other via a plurality of nodes 6. The reinforced composite made from the preform and the method for producing the preform are also provided. The reinforcement particles are mixed with prepolymers used to produce a fugitive binder for the particles containing a foamed polymer, and the particles align themselves with the polymer portions of the resulting foam.
