PURPOSE: To improve the chipping resistance and wear resistance of a high pressure phase boron nitride sintered body for a tool and to impart a long service life thereto.
CONSTITUTION: This high pressure phase boron nitride sintered body for a cutting tool is constituted of (1) 20 to 80wt.% high pressure phase baron nitride and (2) 80 to 20wt.% intermetallic compounds of the carbon nitride of titanium Ti (C, N) in which the atomic weight ratio of carbon (C) to nitrogen (N) is regulated to N/C≤0.15 and at least one metal selected from a group of Al, W, Co and Zr. As for its producing method, the powdery body having the same compsn. is uniformly mixed, and after that, sintering is executed at ≥1000°C sintering temp. under 2.4 to <4Gpa sintering pressure.
