To provide a wide dynamic range camera with a most significant feature that an image of an object having brightness over a wide range can be excellently picked up.
For example, the wide dynamic range camera picks up the image of the object at a low shutter speed and a high shutter speed and obtains a low shutter speed image and a high shutter speed image from a CCD camera 12. In that case, a low-speed integrated value integrating luminance signals of low shutter speed images and a high-speed integrated value integrating luminance signals of high shutter speed images are respectively detected by an integrated value circuit 31. Then, a mean luminance value of the low-speed integrated values and a means luminance value of the high-speed integrated values are respectively calculated by a microcomputer circuit 15. Besides, the microcomputer circuit 15 is configured to calculate a shutter speed optimal for picking up low luminance portion of the object and a shutter speed optimal for picking up a high luminance portion of the object based upon the respective mean luminance values.
