To provide an image reading apparatus capable of correctly detecting the outline of a document without being affected by density of the document.
An illumination light source is arranged so that the shadow of a document can be formed in an upper part of a read image of a first surface of the document, and another illumination light source is arranged so that a shadow of the document is formed in a lower part of a read image of a second surface the document. Both the surfaces of the document are read, an end of the upper part of the document is detected from an image read from the first surface, and an end of the lower part of the document is detected from an image read from the second surface. The outline of the entire document is obtained by combining both the detection results with each other.
