Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To code a video signal at an enhanced compression rate by combining a coded contour signal, a coded border signal and a coded pixel signal to generate a coded IMAGE signal.
SOLUTION: A contour coding circuit 11 converts contour information into contour data denoting a contour of a front image region and gives the data to a variable length coder VCL 12 and a 2nd coding channel 20. Pixel information is given to the channel 20, where a coded border signal is generated by using the contour data. A border pixel extract circuit 22 uses the received contour data to generate a set of border pixel values and gives them to a PCM/Q circuit 23. A 3rd code channel 30 converts the pixel signal into a pixel signal coded statistically and gives it to an MUX 40. The MUX 40 combines the coded contour signal, the coded order signal and the coded pixel signal under the control of a processor to generate a coded video signal.
