To provide an imaging apparatus in which imaging is prevented from being failed, under control using software, even when a display panel is unexpectedly closed by influences of a strong wind or water flow.
In a digital video camera 100 including an imaging section 150 for imaging a subject and an LCD panel 110, for displaying a captured image, which is passively freely opened and closed, the digital video camera 100 is set to an underwater imaging mode or a non-underwater imaging mode, it is detected whether the LCD panel 110 is in an open state or a closed state, and it is determined whether the LCD panel 110 is closed. In the case where it is determined that the LCD panel 110 is closed during imaging by the imaging section 150, if the digital video camera is set to the underwater imaging mode, imaging by the imaging section 150 is continued but if the digital video camera is set to the non-underwater imaging mode, imaging by the imaging section 150 is stopped.
